The job description covers the basic duties and responsibilities for a Technical Director job in an engineering or high-technology business. The technical director holds ultimate responsibility for developing and implementing the engineering and product strategies to ensure the business meets its goals and objectives.

Duties include, but are not limited to of the Technical Director:

  • Manage the engineering resource within the business and control the budget/cost centre. This could cover a multi-discipline team of diverse engineers including firmware, ic design, DSP/algorithm, mechanical, electronics and applications software.
  • Develop the company and product strategy alongside the Board of Directors
  • Define the new product development (NPD) strategy
  • Execution of all development activities whilst oversee the product’s life cycle from conception to completion, with an emphasis on technical soundness and resource efficiency 
  • Analyse user requirements and usability metrics to ensure customer satisfaction and market penetration.
  • Serves as a technical expert representative across teams, clients and support the sales & marketing organisation.
  • Develop tools and processes that reduce engineering lead time, quality, reusability, reliability and compliance to standards.
  • Measure and monitor objectives.
  • Maintain a knowledge of new technologies and research in the given field.
  • Communicate a vision internally and externally (conferences, events, exhibitions).

Background of the Technical Director?

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree in a technical discipline (Electronics, Physics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering etc.) and demonstrable skills in exceeding expectations whilst delivering market focused products, on-time and to budget. 
  • Proven track record of successfully managing similar sized engineering organisations.
  • Inspirational leader and motivator of people.
  • Excellent communications skills, organisation skills and critical thinking abilities.

Salary expectations for a Technical Director are high. Technical Director salaries in small businesses would typically start around £70K per annum. Average salaries for Technical Directors would be between £100-£160K however for many the salary range will be even higher.
