Oftentimes indistinguishable from a Managing Director, the General Manager directs and coordinates activities of one or more departments in a high-technology business, such as engineering, operations or sales, or a major division of the business organization and aids chief administrative officers in formulating and administering organization policies by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers.
What are the primary responsibilities of an General Manager?
Duties include, but are not limited to of the General Manager:
- Management responsibilities for a business operation including P&l.
- Participation in formulating and administering company policies, directing and coordinating all divisional department activities to develop and implement long-range goals and objectives to meet business and profitability growth objectives.
- Reviewing analyses of activities, costs, operations and forecast data to determine department or division progress toward stated goals and objectives.
- Conferring with the CEO to review achievements and discuss required changes in goals or objectives resulting from current status and conditions.
- Developing, reviewing, updating business strategic planning, including sales, financial performance and new product development.
- Overseeing manufacturing and materials departments to review production and operating reports and resolve operational, manufacturing and facility problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays and to meet future growth.
- Providing leadership to process improvements and corrective actions
- Overseeing key projects, processes and performance reports, data and analysis.
- Reviewing and supporting engineering and sales to oversee design concepts with fundamental or new technology used for new or existing products or improvement to provide cost reduction, safety, customer requirements and market growth.
- Reviewing operations and plans to meet requirements for sales planning and to ascertain manufacturing or outsourcing requirements to develop new markets.
- Reviewing and approving preparation of accounting analysis for budgetary planning and implementation, production efficiency, financial reporting, budgetary planning and submittal for capital expenditures.
- Ensuring the business or division is run in the most effiecient and effective manner, to obtain the best possible return on assets and capital employed
- A General Manager will often have arrived at their role via a commercial and / technical path. Depending on their first degree they will often have supplemented their tertiary education with an MBA or similar qualification in business management.
- The very use of the word General seems slightly diluting or demeaning when in fact a General Manager is a highly skilled individual who can balance the activity across the business to ensure simultaneous achievement of goals

What are the salary expectations of a General Manager?
Whilst it will be largely dependent on the size of organisation and therefore remit, General Manager’s salaries typically range from £80K to £175K often times with further incentives tied to overarching business goals and metrics.
