What are the Primary Responsibilities of a Director of Product Marketing?

As a Director of Product Marketing, you will be ultimately responsible for the outbound marketing activities for your products. You and your team will craft the messaging and positioning for products. You'll conceive and develop innovative marketing programs that drive demand. Attention to detail and an eye for quality, along with the ability to grasp and translate technical capabilities into benefits is crucial.  In your role as a Director of Product Marketing you will be the expert in buyers, how they buy and their buying criteria and will transfer that knowledge to the sales channel.

Duties include, but are not limited to of the Director of Product Marketing:

  • Build and lead a team of world-class, high-powered product marketing managers. 
  • Partner with Product Management to infuse customer, partner and competitive insights into the product road-map 
  • Develop positioning and messaging that resonate with customers, communicating product features/capabilities in terms and categories that customers understand. 
  • Know the customer. Have close relationships with important customers and be able to evangelise how our products have been successful in different customer scenarios. 
  • Segment Marketing. Develop and market integrated solutions across core industry segments.
  • Channel Strategy. Refine go-to-market strategy, considering new models to attract and retain new channel partners and customer segments 
  • Sales & Marketing enablement – Create materials that help sales reps and partners effectively position and sell products against the competition. Communicate the value proposition of the products to the sales and marketing teams as the customer-facing product-based subject matter expert. 
  • Product launch. Plan and orchestrate the launch of new products and releases and manage the cross-functional implementation of the plan. 
  • Market intelligence. Be the expert on vertical markets, buyer personas, how they buy. 
  • Develop strong working relationships with product management, sales operations, corporate marketing and sales.
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) often a Chartered Marketer (CIM)
  • 10+ years’ experience in leading an integral marketing function in a large technology sector business
  • Demonstrable and quantifiable experience in driving successful marketing campaigns that have gone on to provide competitive advantage
  • Excellent communication skills, organisational and analytical skills.

What are the salary expectations of a Director of Product Marketing?

A few factors such as the maturity and size of the business will have a bearing but in broad terms a Director of Product Marketing will command a salary of between £120K - £180K with an attractive STIP and LTIP along with some form of equity participation in the business
