A Chief information officer (CIO) is a job title commonly given to the most senior executive in an enterprise responsible for the information technology and systems that support enterprise goals. CIO’s are directly required to map out both the ICT strategy and ICT policy of an organisation.
What are the Primary Responsibilities of a CIO?
Duties include, but are not limited to of the CIO:
- Responsible for leading, coordinating and directing the IT and business teams activity to achieve company goals
- Develops strategies to improve the efficiency and efficacy of technological initiatives
- Leadership of the organisation’s technical team to deliver the roadmap
- Work with the board and management team to agree a technology roadmap
- Work with commercial team on procurement activity e.g. product cost reduction, manufacturing, technical development and outsourcing
- Identify cost down opportunities
- Ensuring all technical compliance and regulatory requirements are complete
- Scanning the technology landscape and evaluating emerging technologies
- Managing external technical stakeholder relationships
- Effectively engage, influence and collaborate across the company to achieve a consistent, business-aligned IT strategy
- Prepare the annual information systems operating plan and budget, OPEX & CAPEX
- Ensure appropriate security measures are in place to protect information and systems and information assets, actively monitor IT risks and recommend mitigation strategies
- Proven experience as CIO or similar managerial role
- Excellent knowledge of IT systems, Applications and infrastructure
- Solid understanding of budgeting and business operations
- A proven track record of strategic planning, change management and execution
- Superior analytical and problem-solving capabilities
- A strong strategic and business mindset
- Excellent organisational and leadership skills
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal abilities
- BSc/BA in computer science, engineering or relevant field; MSc/MA will be preferred
What are the salary expectations of a CIO?
A few factors such as the maturity and size of the business will have a bearing but in broad terms a CIO will command a salary of between £100K - £350K with an attractive STIP and LTIP along with some form of equity participation in the business.
